No one wants to believe that his or her child might have something wrong with them and require the services of a child psychologist. However, you need to remember that it is your responsibility to do what is best for your child. How do you know if you need to consider a child psychologist?

Before you make this decision, consider some of the warning signs that will help you to determine if you need to seek professional help. If your child speaks or writes about hurting him or herself, this is usually a good reason for concern. Do not ignore statements about hurting themselves because you do not think a child would do so. If your child runs away from home, there is an underlying reason for this. You may not be able to discover the reason on your own and if you do not act, the courts may take your child from you and have them checked by a child psychologist.

Some children will express anger or withdrawal much longer than might be necessary. If your child remains angry many days after the fact, some other reason may be the cause. A professional can talk with your child to find out if there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Children often challenge their parents' authority but when a child does so in a way that puts them in danger, this could mean something is wrong.

If your child attempts suicide or overdoses on drugs or chemicals, you need to immediately have them see a child psychologist. Children that cut themselves or appear to be in many accidents may be exhibiting signs that are calling for help. Rapid and wild mood changes can indicate problems as well. Do not ignore the signs your child is providing you with. Consider a child psychologist before the problem escalates into one that you cannot deal with.
